Decision Time

Salaam,

People, i need your advice ASAP.

As those who know me well, know that im not good at making decisions. But i need to make a decision asap! I need to decide whether to stay here for the next term or got to Egypt (most likely the qortoba institute)

Pros for Qasid:
1) Very good teaching (esp grammar)
2) Very nice living conditions and general area is very nice and peaceful, unlike Cairo..
3) Have "settled" in
4) Being able to carry on going to Sh Nuh talks, other random classes eg hanafi fiqh etc

Cons for Qasid:
1) Very Very Very expensive tuition and living costs (x3 Cairo)
2) Very expensive
3) Has got boring already - not too much to be seen round here

Pros for Cairo:
1) Very very cheap - tutiton and general costs
2) Very "live" city
3) If i go here, then i'll save enough money to go to Tunisia/Morrocco and maybe Spain. If i stay in Amman, i cant as money will run out
4) More of an adventure than just staying in Amman for a solid block of 6 months

Cons for Cairo:
1) Dirty, noisy, smelly...not very conducive for studying
2) Dont know anyone there
3) The constant haggling for prices of things and general bureaucracy
4) Study will be very "skills" rather than grammar

So what to do? what to do?? HELP!!!

Salaam

  • Id say it depends upon how serious you are at advancing your Arabic studies. What were your expectations or targets when your started off? do you think that by going to egypt you will miss those targets? if so dont go, there is the opportunity cost of missing out on wonderful experiances in new places but to be honest you will be able to travel in the future but wether or not youll have the time or dedication to advance your Arabic skills to the levels staying in Jordan will achieve is doubtable.

so a very relevant analysis there for you, the Bukhari Shah analysis would be = the most precious things in life come from interactions with people and rare indeed are the jewels that come from travel.I would travel, but we're not the same person.

p.s. there is a bloke in Amman who is a mate of rashid's he used to live in burnley/blackburn. Rashid said to call him, good bloke apparantly. if you want rhe number email me.

  • Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

Definitely do istikhara, but I'm sure you already know that.

I would say that there is a reason for everything, and a reason why you ended up in Jordan. If you feel your Arabic instruction is excellent there and that you are benefitting from the people and durus around you, than it is worth way more than the money you are spending.

By leaving you may have more fun, but really think about if you will gain as much in knowledge and good company. It may be that you will, but it also may be that you won't.

Weigh your options cafefully, and be weary of leaving a good thing if unsure as to what you are leaving it for....

May Allah ta'ala assist you in you endeavors.

    Wassalaam
